Connacht

Connacht

Our take on wildlife gardening for Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon, or Sligo

County Sligo has varied soil and your exact plot should be checked on the Soil MAP OF IRELAND. LINKXXX

Outside of Urban areas, most of Connacht has acid to neutral soils. High rainfall, much has poor drainage and high winds and heavy snow to the north. Parts are undulating, which can mean dry upper fields and wet bottoms.

The Connacht coast line has some stretches of sandy soil with enough lime to make a difference. (p.H .7.5) Machair vegetation in Co Sligo should not be sown with wildflowers, even our native sourced flora as it would introduce non local geno-types. Ideally all those house built near the machair should be issued with advice not to sow any wildflowers, nor plants that will cross bred with them, especially commercial or imported.

Upland regions out west, all tend to be acidic and derived from basic soil or peatland. Aas mountain topography folds, dips and rises, there are no broadscale rules as one meadow can be afield on good soil, where next door it can be afield of blanket peat and sedges.

Throughout the region some ‘good fields’ can be found, maybe too good to grow wildflowers, better left to Haggard, Orchard, Pasture or Forest. If your planning a wildflower hay meadow on fertile soil, please contact use before you start any works, as there are some steps to avoid early on that save lots of grief later.

Ulster

Ulster:

Antrim, Armagh, Cavan,  Derry-Londonderry,  Donegal, Down, Fermanagh,  Monaghan, Tyrone

As a general rule, ignoring micro-climates, the North of Ireland is a few weeks behind weather wise and has a shorter growing season.

The northern counties of Ulster, have varied soils from Limestone in Fermanagh to dry acid Heathland in Co Down. Most counties have high rainfall, bar the eastern and central lowerlands

Donegal, has mostly acid soil, with pockets of loam, sand and extensive peatlands.

Upland and seaside Donegal, particularly suffer severe weather and some of our more temperamental wildflowers love those conditions, others do not.

Munster

Munster:

Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, Waterford

Munster has both alkaline and acidic soil and in the Mallow north cork area some very fertile fields.

Often in West Cork and Kerry when growing wildflowers we recommend keeping to the wettest and shallowest soils, leaving better ground for Agriculture and Horticulture, not that it cant be sown with wildflora, but why when there is even more opportunity to grow great crops, grass or trees.

Waterford and Tipperary have strong and fertile soils in the lowlands and acid soils in the uplands.

Leinster

Leinster:

Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wexford, Wicklow

The East of Ireland is mostly dryer, flatter, (with a few exceptions) and due to land prices, housing demands and population pressure in general, there are far higher expectations required to justify the results of flora.  I personally think that the Irish Pollinators Plan’s introduction of imported species of Not- wildflowers, ruined the east coasts expectations of wildflowers, Instead of rural meadow species, East coasters seek ‘chocolate box’ type meadows, multi-coloured and ‘as seen on social media or T.v’ ie. unreal false flora that fails to grow past two full years, and its 3 times the price, all imported pollinator plants, what a mess this government funded body has generated with it’s any pollinator plant will do. but ‘don’t use a native’ silly attitude.
