Critical info for us to determine what will grow.
Most plants don't grow in 'shade' cast by trees, building, hills or a northern aspect. Those that do like leaf-litter, not soil. Please read about the special conditions shade lovers require.
pH is a scale measure of Lime or alkalinity, a measure of hydrogen ion (H+) activity and refers to the calcium content present in the soil. Unsure? Ask someone local for guidance. Failing that ask the plants, blue hydrangea?, heather, rhododendron and more will only grow om acid soil Please Note, the pH of well water is not an indicator of soil pH. as most Irish soils are acidic to neutral, nor strongly alkaline.
We can add a species here and there for free, if South face = Warm site, North facing = Cold site. Sheltered = Warm site. Upland or exposed to strong winds = Cold site. Often it's that one extra species that wont grow anywhere else that make a meadow special. Site aspect also effects: our specific advice, the best sowing time, flowering period and most of all, about weed control.
Know your weeds, help us choose the best mixture for your site. Maybe you already have a lawn or uncut rough grass, or you have 'killed off' the existing vegetation, as we often recommend. Tell us, What weed grows in abundance in the locality? any of the following? Heather, Bracken, Foxglove, Gorse, Rushes, Rough/old uncut Grass, Dock, Nettles, Couch Grass, Thistles, White Clover, Creeping Buttercup, Horsetail? are nearby fields full of Wheat, Corn or Grass fields, spruce forest, SAC, or in an old meadow, wheres it best not to kill weeds In all cases Dock and Thistle must be destroyed by law as they are noxious weeds or in the case of 'scutch'/'switch' it will ruin a meadow.
Your chance to describe your site in more detail, please be brief with short descriptions. Tell us....What will the site be used for? Will animals graze it? Do you want tall, short, medium or graded heights? Especially, Do you want: No maintenance, 1 cut or mid high (1-2 cuts) or maybe a 3 cut per year for a short meadow.
Your general location helps identify your soil type, What County? (ex: S.East Laois) Nearest large Town? (ex between Calow, Kilkenny and Portlaoise) Please, No post or eircodes as we use quick view soil maps which only show large towns.
