Slug Resistant
Slug Resistance
Wildflowers are generally slug resistant after the first 6 to 8 leaves develop. As a seedling they are vulnerable to slugs and other wild creatures. Wildflowers are more susceptible to slug damage in the early years than when mature. A few wildflowers contains substances which deter slugs, other have hairs or plant parts to deter slugs.
As slugs and especially slugs eggs are important parts of any ecosystem, in blending mixtures we allow for some damage and give enough seed per metre. In very harsh springs, cold wet, dull and no growth, we find slugs can damage newly sown meadows. On tillage ground Field slugs and other burrow into the soil, and can be a nuisance in the first year, again in cold slow to start springs.
Once real spring temperatures and growth arrives slugs have enough food sources and generally do little damage in a meadow
