Infrastructure effective Ecosystems
Our Blue chip Infrastructure clients over the years, include, NPWS, OPW, Coillte, Irish Rail, BnM, ESB International, Waterways Ireland, Royal Dutch Shell, Intel, Apple, Phizer, Whyatt, to name very few.
To all clients we say “Large scale Infrastructure will always fragment habitats, Small scale can also destroy local features”.
At DBN we repair damaged landscapes, we connect spaces in the landscape to each other and create wildlife corridors, this greatly reduces ‘fragmented landscapes’ and can often bring restorative ecological services back to that that was locally lost.
We explain how ‘Nature is abundant’, and most species need an abundance of flora, Birds are attracted to where there are many of the same species of plant, its fruit, seeds or the insects that feed on wildflowers.

Our products and services make a restorative difference
The total volume of seeds we have supplied into the Irish market since 1990. Along waterways, roads, shore line and over farms, is over 6,500 hectares of our wildflower seed sown by 2025. That equates to 1.6 metres of our seeds to every 1000 metres of land in Ireland, as you see claims made on this website, about this micro business having great effect across all sectors are most clearly evident on the macro landscape scale.
Our job is to join together, all those sites and metres sown with forest, species rich farmland, waterways and all the other natural elements of the landscape. We create wildlife corridors or ecological greenways, on your site and through your site to the next. We simply do this all from a sack of sustainably produced native Irish seeds.
Unlike many designers, we do not glorify ‘greed or unsustainable practices’ with green washing.
When we advise on any site we seek both a macro benefit for Nature and a micro abundance of ecosystem services, which our flora weave together, for they are the most natural ‘basic building block’ of infrastructure. Our wildflowers repair soil, build humus, capture carbon, store and purify water. All our products attract huge quantities of wildlife. Site Biodiversity increases dramatically, fauna increase ten fold and the inter-related services between species, (the real meaning of Biodiversity), all act to restore natural abundance, even around the most intensives situations we design constructed ecosystems that are fire proof, moisture retaining, kept clean of litter, scented and beautiful.
Nature is abundant, it’s understanding and species that are scarce
Scale: Large plots and meadows of wild flower on infrastructure, really assist restoration and habitat creation, as we say, nature needs abundance, lots of the same tree or shrub, lots of the same flowers, as species will visit those places first as it’s easy picking, less travel and usually safety in the numbers of individual species that visit. Abundance, just hold that thought, Nature is Abundant.
Wildlife travels along routes, we have sown so much large scale infrastructure in Ireland. Much of what was planted and grew was next to farmland, forest, bog and coast. Our wildflowers have been successfully planted from mountain top to seashore.
The net effect of so much planting on infrastructure is to connect all the above landscape features together so that wildlife can move across the landscape and in some cases, such large scale planting directly assists migrating species.
The very name, Infrastructure, usually implies large scale with effect for the common good. Often funded in part by the European community. Design By Nature constantly persuades clients that they should look at the greater landscape,
Consider:
Order years in advance as species need to be propagated and then grown as a crop, (crops are ready, 2 to 7 years, depending on species)
